Abacus Learning Center opened in September of 1994 by co-owners Sharon Jacobs and Beverly Gilbert. They believed strongly in creating a clean, safe learning environment for young children. In May of 2005 Beverly Gilbert retired leaving Sharon Jacobs as the sole proprietor of Abacus. Abacus Learning Center is now run under the direction of Sharon Jacobs, Owner and Stephanie Kolb, Program Director. Both women hold a BA degree in Education, and Stephanie Kolb also has a specialization in Special Education Pre-K through 12. Stephanie holds an Advanced Level Director's Credential.
Our teachers have varying backgrounds; we have teachers who have a college degree in Elementary or Early Childhood Education, or a related field, and a few who have a Masters degree. The majority of our staff have been with our center for over 10 years. Many of our staff also have CPR Training as well as First Aid. All staff are carefully screened in accordance with the State of Florida guidelines.
Our mission is to embrace the pursuit of excellence both inside and outside the classroom. We encourage critical thinking and emphasize the learning process over rote memorization.
Our two year old classroom focuses on learning basic concepts of letters, numbers, colors, shapes, name recognition and more combined with arts, music, and free play. There is also a concentration on socialization and self-help skills (i.e. hand-washing, toileting, taking turns, manners, etc.)
The focus of our multi-age classroom is working on skills needed to be successful in VPK. We work on teacher led instruction in small and large groups while still focusing on basic skills in addition to incorporating music, arts, and free play. We introduce Stretch-n-Grow into the curriculum during this year as well.
Our VPK classrooms follow the curriculum requirements set by the Department of Education. We continue working on advancing basic skills through print knowledge, spatial relationships, oral language and vocabulary, mathematics, science, social skills, phonological awareness and other areas of concentration.
We incorporate Stretch-n-Grow into our curriculum beginning in the three year old school year and continue into VPK. This program is INCLUDED with normal monthly tuition. We offer the Sun Country gym bus on Friday mornings. Parents are able to sign up their children and make payments directly through Sun Country if you wish to take advantage of this offering. We also offer Dance with Dawn on Monday afternoons which is a creative movement class offering for both girls and boys. Parents are able to sign up their children and make payments directly through Dance with Dawn if you wish to take advantage of this offering.
